In December 2024, The Failure Institute partnered with Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) to host an event centered on academic vulnerability stories.
This event offered a refreshing alternative to traditional year-end gatherings. It created a safe space for PhD students to openly share stories of failure, aiming to humanize academic success and reduce pressure.
The VUB team approached The Failure Institute with a clear goal. They wanted a small event where PhD students could hear academic vulnerability stories from their own academic community. These stories aimed to reduce pressure, promote empathy, and show failure as a learning tool.
Through a private event, The Failure Institute co-designed an experience where researchers, teachers, and PhDs discussed academic vulnerability stories. The event fostered honest conversations and personal connection.
The edition featured three speakers – Jan De Beule, Jana Goyvaerts and Bert Quintiens. Each shared academic vulnerability stories highlighting career challenges and key lessons.
Dr. Jan De Beule, professor in the Department of Mathematics and Data Science, spoke about the impact of a PhD student’s resignation on his research funding. He emphasized that managing people involves more than technical skill evaluation.
Jana Goyvaerts, PhD in Media and Communication Studies, revealed her internal struggles despite outward success. Her academic vulnerability story included a mental health crisis after four years in her PhD journey.
The event took place right before the Christmas break on VUB’s main campus. Students described the event as a breath of fresh air. Several even shared their own academic vulnerability stories on the wall of failures, thanking the organizers for fostering open and empathetic dialogue.
The collaboration between VUB and The Failure Institute showed that sharing academic vulnerability stories strengthens community. Vulnerability fosters human connection and transforms failure into growth.
This event aligned with VUB’s mission as an Engaged Urban University. By promoting dialogue, it contributed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, advancing critical thinking and generating local and global impact.
